The Identity Lens
Identity shapes experience. Awareness shapes movement.
The Lens
The Identity Lens is a way of understanding experiences through both psychological and social contexts.
It recognizes that people’s experiences are shaped not just internally, but by the systems and environments they move through. Drawing from psychology and social justice perspectives, it explores how identity is formed and navigated across different settings.
Rather than viewing burnout or distress as purely individual, this lens situates those experiences within a broader context. It highlights how expectations, adaptation, and perception are influenced by both personal and systemic factors.
The goal is to create a clearer, more grounded understanding of what people are navigating, and to support more intentional ways of moving through it.
The Reality
Identity and culture shape how people move through pressure, performance, and expectations in academic and professional environments.
These spaces are not always neutral. Many people are constantly aware of how they are perceived, understood, and positioned. Over time, this shapes not just what they do, but how they show up. Much of this effort happens internally and often goes unrecognized.
Burnout, in this context, is not just about workload. It is also the result of navigating these dynamics over time.
Ongoing awareness of how one is perceived
Navigating cultural differences and unspoken expectations
Adjusting behavior across different environments
Internal effort that often goes unseen
Burnout shaped by more than just workload
